New Puppies, Panama Cruise and a new Winner
May 2, 2008
We took the pugs out for a walk yesterday around
6:30 pm, but left the pregnant girl, Mini Me, at home. She was quite upset about
being left behind, so Ray took her out for a leisurely stroll around the green
belt. She was quite perky and happy to be outside in the fresh air. When they
got back she immediately went to her bed. Half an hour later I got up from a
snooze on the couch to check on her. Mini Me was licking something vigorously. I
pulled (what I thought was a toy) away to discover it was a puppy! She had
unexpectedly delivered a puppy-without warning--without straining or pushing.
There had been no indication she was about to deliver, whatsoever. The puppy was
cold but still alive. Ray and I rubbed the little guy under the heat lamp and he
slowly began to move. Luckily he survived!
Soon six more puppies were born (3 boys and 3
girls). Unfortunately the very last puppy (#7) was still born. All
in all, it was a very successful delivery, considering the vet had suggested a
caesarian (one of the puppies was blocking the birth canal).
Mini Me is a very proud, loving mother. She has
not left the puppies except to go to the bathroom outside. Her appetite has
returned with a vengence. This morning she ate her entire breakfast plus Sam's!
Ray and I returned from a 3 week Holland America
cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida through the Panama Canal, ending in
Vancouver just two days ago. We arrived home just in time to pick up the pugs
and deliver a litter of puppies the next day. Talk about cutting it close. The
cruise was wonderful. The weather was fantastic (in the 80's almost every day
except for the last three).
While we were away, Jamie (Gibby's Fire Storm)
won at the EKC dog show big time with one Best of Breed, and two Best of
Opposite Sex for a total of 7 points towards her championship. We are very proud
of Jamie and very grateful to Kris who showed her for us in our absence.
Kris did a fantastic job showing Jamie and taking care of Mini Me (who lost her
appetite during her pregnancy). I suspect Kris and Gary had to hand feed Mini Me
the entire 3 weeks. Without their help we probably wouldn't have six healthy,
happy puppies and a new champ in the family.

Tilly Finishes Her Championship in the East
Tilly (who is the daughter of
Onya & Sunny) is a new 2008 Champion. Incredibly, she was only shown 4 weekends
(in Cold Lake for 5 pts, at the Markham Kennel Club for 1 pt, Pine Ridge
Kennel Club for 1 pt and at the huge Ontario Breeders Show in Markham, Ontario
for a 4 point major, where she finished her championship! At the
last show, there were 9 class females and 3 class males entered, for a total of
12 class pugs in competition. Tilly went Best of Winners for a nice 4 pt win
under judge Bruce Owen. She showed "her heart out" which is one of the reasons
she did so well. Tilly received many compliments at the Toronto show and
everyone wanted to know where she came from (yeah Alberta)!
Tilly will now go to work
earning her performance and obedience titles. Michelle, her proud owner,
writes "Thanks again for the lovely girl that Tilly is growing into and we will
keep you posted on her progress in the obedience ring."

A New Champion in the Family September 2007
Mini Me now formally CH Gibby's In A League of Her Own completed her
championship this weekend with Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Wins.
We are very proud of this little dog who almost wasn't. Mini Me is a joy
to handle in the ring with a sparkly personality and wonderful good manners.

Sumo finishes his Championship in Red Deer
November 2007
Sumo got the royal treatment after finishing his
Championship. Everyone is very proud of him, even his grandparents!
As a result he is very spoiled.

Sumo Wins 2 Best of Breeds
September 2007 Edmonton Kennel Club Dog Show
"We
are so proud of Sumo", writes Sheryl his ecstatic owner. "Sumo puts all
his energy into the show and loves the attention."
"He
loves to be front and centre of things, so we think he is a natural."
Sumo
(Gibby's Count Calvin) is the son of Onya and Sunny. As a puppy we called him
Calvin, in memory of a close friend who
was
suffering from cancer at the time of the puppies' birth on June 30, 2006.
Sadly, Calvin passed away but we will remember him every
time we see his namesake in the show ring.

Mugsy Wins Again in the East
On Sunday, May 7, 2007 Mugsy took Best of
Opposite Sex and Winners Bitch over 9 other pugs including Specials at the
Seaway Kennel Club Show for another 2 points. Way to Go!

Mugsy Wins Best Puppy in Group
at the Seaway Show in Ontario today, May 4th
2007. Mugsy took Winners, Best of Winners, Best of Opposite and Best Puppy
in Group (over 9 other pugs in breed and numerous puppies in group). She
was owner handled by Sandy, who is thrilled to pieces!
Sandy writes "What a day...what a thrill....I
think this judge (Mr. Tougas) just loved her...I've never had so many
compliments and congratulations in my life in a show....hope you are as happy as
you've made me....I can't tell you what this means to me....thank you hardly
seems sufficient!"
Sandy - I am so proud of you and Mugsy. Big
Time Congratulations on Mugsy's first 3 points. Keep it up, she
will be a champion in no time! Doris
Mugsy is an Onya X Sunny puppy born June 30, 2006.

We had puppies born on April 16, 2007
3 boys and 2 girls. They were sired by CH Freedom Sunnysmile O'Snuggle
(Sunny) X CH Gibby's Dark Angel (Alanna).
This is Alanna's first litter. She is a terrific mom! The puppies
are so good (they rarely cry or stir up a fuss). Obviously, they are well
fed and well looked after by a loving, attentive mother. Look how uniform they
are in size--at birth they all weighed between 6 and 6-3/4 ounces. Here
they are at 2 weeks:

We have Puppies! Carmela Delivered 3 Girls and 1 Boy on
October 7, 2006
The little guys are growing like weeds. They are 4 weeks old in this
photo.

We loved the last litter so much, we wanted a repeat breeding of CH Gibby's
Supernatural (Carmela) to AM & CAN CH Freedom's Sunnysmile O'Snuggle (Sunny).
Onya's Puppies Leaving Home
They're 8 weeks old and leaving home one by one. This is Eric who was the
"shrimp" of the litter......................but look at him now!
Eric is going to live in Jasper, where he will no doubt entertain the many
tourists who flock there year round.

Arrivals in February 23, 2006
On Christmas Day, Sam (CH Gibby's Lightning Strikes) sired
a litter of puppies that was born today - three handsome boys and 1 beautiful
girl. Sam had the best Christmas ever, but it was a little inconvenient
for the rest of us. (Especially for the owners of the dam who were
traveling out of town to be with family). Nevertheless, the
inconvenience was well worth it, because today we celebrate the arrival of new
pugs on earth.
Congratulations to Vanessa and Lance - the proud human
parents!

Here they are at 8 weeks:

CALGARY DOG SHOW
February 5, 2006
Sam and his daughter Onya took Best Brace in Group at the Calgary Dog show
this weekend. In addition, Sam won Best of Breed and Onya took Best of
Opposite Sex. The father and daughter team are not well matched in size,
but they are so tuned to each other that they match their stride, step for step.
There was a great turn out with 15 pugs entered. Good to see so many fine dogs.

Not only does their stride match step for step,
but they seem to think the same way.
A SMALL MIRACLE
January 23, 2006
Michele in Calgary went to bed last night at 8:30 pm and
woke up at 6:00 am this morning to discover a brand new life. The miracle of
birth had taken place in a tiny kennel next to her bed, as she soundly slept
the night away. Michele was totally unaware that her 5 year old pug Xena had
been pregnant for the past 9 weeks. The tiny little 14 pound pug had shown no
signs whatsoever that she was pregnant. Her weight and her appetite had
remained stable. She had not displayed any of the usual tendencies of a bitch
in whelp, such as digging and nesting behavior. She had fooled an entire
household of adults and children.
This morning, Michele opened the door to Xena's kennel to
find her curled around a new life in the form of a baby girl pug puppy! Upon
closer examination Michele discovered a second puppy, all cleaned up and dry
but lifeless and cold to the touch. She was astonished beyond words. What
had happened? How was this possible? It was a miracle! How could
Xena have gotten pregnant and delivered two puppies without assistance and
without anyone even suspecting that she was pregnant? Why did only one puppy
survive? Other members of the family were frantically summoned to witness the
miracle. Heating lamps, heating pads and towels were pulled out of closets to
accommodate the new arrival.
When things settled down, the discussion turned to how?
How did this happen? The only possible explanation was that Mo, (the
other pug in the house) had somehow pulled a "fast one" when no one was
watching. Perhaps the grandchildren had unthinkingly allowed the two dogs to
get together? No one knew. No one had witnessed a romantic interlude between
the two pugs.
The mystery of how Xena got pregnant will remain
............ a mystery. How she hid her pregnancy and how she delivered two
puppies without human intervention is unknown. What is known is that Xena is
a hero amongst pugs. For there are few pugs on this earth who could deliver a
puppy without assistance. I know because I have been breeding pugs for 35
years and I have seen the need to assist in every delivery. The pug breed has
been domesticated since before the time of the ancient Ming dynasty and we
assume that their natural instincts have been lost along the way, due to human
intervention. But perhaps we do not give this wonderful, loving breed enough
credit. Their natural instinct to reproduce and survive remains intact.
Witness Xena and her new daughter named Gem, born today, Monday, January 23rd,
2006. Here are pictures of Mo and Xena:

Sam takes a Group 4 Award in Lloydminster
September 24, 2005
It is always a great pleasure to attend the Lloydminster Dog Show because the
exotic animal auction takes place next door. This year we had the
pleasure of seeing miniature horses, pot belly pigs, llamas and alpacas.
Sam wins a Group 3 Award
September 10, 2005
Sam leaped 3 feet high over the staircase this afternoon on his way to the
dog show. He felt like a winner and it showed in his performance in the
show ring. Sam took a Group 3 award at the Edmonton Kennel Club show in
Edmonton this weekend.

We are the Proud Breeders of the
#1 Obedience Pug in Canada for 2004
Jazzy J was the top scoring
obedience pug of 2004.
Big Time Congratulations go to Simone Norman who took Jazzy J to the top of
the obedience dog world!

Father and Daughter Team Bring Home the Ribbons

April 2005
Sam and Onya were entered in a brace competition at the recent Toy Dog Club
of Alberta Specialty show in April 2005. The "brace" competition is where
two similar dogs are shown on one leash. Although these two dogs are not
perfectly matched, they worked very well together as a team. The result
was - BEST BRACE IN SHOW!
Onya is only 15 months old, but she defeated her own sire and the Top Pug in
Canada for Best of Breed. This is quite an accomplishment for such a young
pug.
Farewell Little Hero
March 7, 2005
I am very sad to announce that Hugo
(Gibby's Prince Hugo CD) passed away today at the age of 14 years. He
was the love of my life. He was my first advanced obedience champion.
He was the one who fell over backwards to please. I will always think of
him with fond memories. There was the time Hugo made the front page of the
local newspaper....
Seven years ago burglars broke into the house. Along
with stereo equipment, cameras, cd's and jewelery, they stole one of my pugs -
Hugo. We enlisted the help of the media to try to get Hugo back. The
story about the "purloined pooch" was all over the television and the Edmonton
Sun newspaper. Our efforts to get Hugo back worked, because a young lady
phoned to tell me she had our pug and that she wanted a $500 reward for his
return. I wholeheartedly agreed to pay the money. I also notified
the Edmonton City Police who traced the telephone call to a home o
n
the Saddle Lake Indian Reservation. A constable went out to the home and
found Hugo. As a result, three people were charged with breaking, entering
and theft. One person was sent to prison. Hugo's theft proved to be
the downfall of the burglars.
Later on in life, Hugo went to live with
Danny and Lilly Cripps. He saved Danny's life one day when Danny fell into
a diabetic coma late at night. Hugo summoned help by barking until Lilly
(Danny's mother) came to the rescue.
We will miss this Little Hero, who is with the angels now.
Rest in Peace.
